The mission of the School Library is to develop a community of lifelong readers and learners.
The library houses a collection of approximately 6,400 books and subscribes to 4 periodicals. The Teachers’ Resources section includes DVDs, many of which support religious instruction. The Fall Book Fair is a main source of funding for the Library and from these monies new materials are chosen to support the curriculum and the interests of the students. There is also a Spring Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair.
Our Librarian is Mrs. Frances Ablett, who has a BA (Hons.) in Library Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, England.
The Library is open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Grades K through 6 visit the Library once a week. The students check out books, have a story read to them, and learn age-appropriate library skills. Students in Grades 7 and 8 visit the Library any time their schedules allow. Grades 5 through 8 are also encouraged to use the Library for pleasure or study during the lunch-hour.
Mrs. Ablett accepts donations of books or money to the Library. When donating money, checks should be made payable to St. Michael School. All new books will have a bookplate giving the name of the donor affixed in the front of the book.
The Library does not charge fines but if a book is very overdue it is presumed lost and payment to replace it will be requested.
St. Michael subscribes to the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. This is a literature-based computer program that motivates children to read. This program helps build vocabulary and increase comprehension, while promoting the enjoyment of reading.
When selecting books outside of school, students and parents often wish to know if a particular book has an AR test. Accessing AR BookFinder enables you to conduct a search of all available books with AR tests. St. Michael has access to all these tests. A link to this website can be found below.
Although AR is a school-based program and tests can only be taken at school, parents may check their child’s AR record online at any time. A link to the Accelerated Reader (Home Connect) website can be found below. Once accessed, have your child sign on with their AR username and password.
